Fordham Students and Friends of Puerto Rico celebrated AmeriCorps Service Day

One of Friends of Puerto Rico's goals is to promote initiatives that focus on sustainability and self-sufficiency. Last March, as part of these efforts, we welcomed a group of Fordham students to our Panorama Farm, located in the lush mountains of Las Marías.

During their stay, the students participated in several group activities that promoted collaboration and received educational talks about Puerto Rico's culture and climate. Some of the activities were hosted by Angelique Sina (Friends of Puerto Rico’s President) and members of the organization that kindly joined to support the program.

CELEBRATING THE VOLUNTEERING SPIRIT ON AMERICORPS SERVICE DAY

Last March 15th, we celebrated the AmeriCorps Service Day at Panorama Farm. There, AmeriCorps volunteers, Fordham University students, SEEDS program youth entrepreneurs, and the Friends of Puerto Rico team, joined together to plant trees and experience the unique natural environment of Las Marías.

Collaboration and selflessness were in the air! A very heterogeneous group of people with different ages, genders and nationalities united with one purpose: to plant the seeds of the future.

The activity promoted meaningful connections, teamwork, leadership, and sustainability.

During the tree-planting activity, the group learned about the types of plants best suited for the local environment and about our Café Ama, Friends of Puerto Rico’s social impact coffee.

FORDHAM STUDENTS DISCOVERED “LA CHINA”

On March 17th, Fordham students also had the opportunity to be part of the "Festival de La China" which celebrates Las Marías' star product: sweet orange. At our stand, Friends of Puerto Rico promoted its 100% Arábica grains-made coffee: Café Ama.

Café Ama’s purchases support Friends of Puerto Rico’s entrepreneurship training program for Puerto Rican women and our youth program, SEEDS. At the festival, students met the Mayor of Las Marías and his wife.

EXPLORING TEAMWORK AT AGUADILLA BUSINESS CENTER

Fordham students also traveled to Aguadilla and met the Aguadilla Business Center (ABC). There, they were introduced to our coworking space by the sea, and enjoyed a challenging group activity in which they had to divide into two teams, build a raft with waste, and make it float.

Volunteers and Fordham students had a great time and learned how to care for the environment, respect cultural diversity and appreciate the wonders of Puerto Rico.

Friends of Puerto Rico is committed to promoting impactful volunteering to create a better future for the Island and the world. If you wish to join our next cohort of volunteers, you can sign up here; or write to info@friendsofpuertorico.org
